In this workshop we will focus on helping students to develop a fresh approach to painting land and seascapes with expressive mark-making, abstracting out the scene,聽and letting go of the hold that the photo has on us which can lead to overworking an image.
We will help students to create聽vibrant scenes with a strong design and effective use of color and values, by shifting attention to the larger image rather than overfocusing on detail.聽
Either from your reference image or instructor image, you will complete a value sketch of the design for your painting in charcoal or pencil.聽 Students will then complete a painting in about 40 minutes using the sketch and photo; 聽the second painting will be done in 40 minutes from your first painting only with no other reference. After this painting students will complete a third painting from the second painting. The final painting will be done from memory.聽
This workshop challenges our usual ways of seeing and approaching paintings, and deciding when a painting is complete.
Any medium welcome, some experience with using paints is recommended.

Bring 4 to 5 surfaces, canvas or boards, or pad of watercolor paper -11鈥漍 14鈥 or larger.
