Foregrounds are the visual entry 聽into a scene, 聽yet tend to be one of the most overworked elements in paintings.聽 An ineffective foreground can trap the viewer鈥檚 eye and prevent them from moving through and fully exploring the painting.聽 In this 3-week class we will focus on helping students to create effective entry points into their scene that are harmonious with the design and focal point of a painting.聽

Each week we will focus on different elements of the foreground including paths, grasses, rocks, gates and fences, openings in stone walls, the angle of the land, shadows, and value changes that will enable the foreground to be harmonious with the entire scene.聽 We will use value sketches to design effective foregrounds that will be incorporated into completed paintings.聽

Weather permitting, we may do charcoal or pencil sketches outdoors and students may bring their own images as well.聽 We will complete paintings in the studio.

It is recommended students bring 聽pencil, charcoal and sketch paper or pad for value sketches聽

There will be instructor demos in oil, watercolor and individual instruction.

All levels of students welcome painting in any medium
